Introduction to different types of molybdenum wire
Jan 11,2026
The performance of molybdenum wire is rooted in the properties of molybdenum metal itself:
High melting point:Up to 2620℃,one of the highest melting points among common metals.
Excellent strength and hardness:Especially at high temperatures, its strength and creep resistance far exceed most metals(i.e.,good“high-temperature strength”).
Good thermal and electrical conductivity:Electrical conductivity is approximately 30%of copper, and it has good thermal conductivity.
Low thermal expansion coefficient:Small dimensional changes when heated, resulting in high stability.
Corrosion resistance:Good resistance to various acids, alkalis, and molten glass.
Good wear resistance:High surface hardness and low coefficient of friction.
Main Types
According to composition, process, and application,it is mainly divided into the following categories:
1.Pure Molybdenum Wire:
Composition:Molybdenum content is usually above 99.95%.
Characteristics:Has good high-temperature performance and conductivity, but is relatively brittle and has average ductility.
Uses:Electrical discharge machining,filaments,supports,heating elements,etc.
2.High-Temperature Molybdenum Wire(Lanthanum Molybdenum Wire/Rare Earth Molybdenum Wire):
Composition:Trace amounts of lanthanum oxide(La₂O₃)or other rare earth oxides are added to molybdenum.
Characteristics:This is the most important improved variety. After adding rare earth elements, the recrystallization temperature is significantly increased(up to over 1800℃),the anti-sagging ability is extremely strong, and it can maintain a fibrous structure at high temperatures, greatly improving high-temperature ductility and toughness, resulting in a longer service life.
Uses:High-performance light sources(such as halogen lamps, automotive HID lamps),high-temperature furnace heating elements, sapphire crystal growth furnace thermal field components, and other demanding high-temperature applications.
3.Wire Cutting Molybdenum Wire:
Composition:Mainly pure molybdenum wire or specially treated molybdenum wire.
Characteristics:Extremely high requirements for straightness, surface finish, tensile strength, and diameter uniformity.Modern fast-wire EDM machines commonly use molybdenum wire with a diameter of 0.1-0.2 mm.
Uses:Electrical discharge wire cutting for shaping molds and precision parts.
4.Sprayed Molybdenum Wire:
Uses:Through thermal spraying technology, molten molybdenum wire is sprayed onto the surface of a workpiece to form a wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant coating. It is commonly used for repairing engine crankshafts and other components.
