What is molybdenum sheet?

2025-05-22

Molybdenum sheet is a thin sheet material processed from metal molybdenum, with a thickness usually between 0.01 and 2 mm. Due to its excellent high temperature performance, corrosion resistance and excellent mechanical properties, it is widely used in electronics, aerospace, high temperature furnaces and chemical industries. Molybdenum sheets can be made into rectangular, circular or customized shapes, with widths ranging from 10 mm to 1000 mm and lengths up to 2000 mm or cut according to requirements.

The density of molybdenum sheet is 10.28 g/cm3. It has a high melting point, low thermal expansion coefficient, high tensile strength, good elongation and creep resistance. It can resist corrosion from dilute acid (such as hydrochloric acid) and alkali at room temperature, and its performance is better than that of iron.

The manufacturing of molybdenum sheet mainly includes two processes: powder metallurgy and rolling. The powder metallurgy method starts with the selection of high-purity molybdenum powder, which is made into a blank through high-pressure molding, and then sintered at about 2000°C in a vacuum or hydrogen atmosphere, and the density reaches 90-95% of the theoretical value; then, it is further compacted by hot forging or hot rolling, and cold rolled to a thickness of 0.01-1 mm. Finally, annealing is performed to eliminate internal stress, and polishing or pickling is performed to achieve the surface finish. The rolling process includes hot rolling and cold rolling. During the production process, spectral analysis, mechanical testing, microscopic inspection and surface testing are used to ensure accurate specifications and reliable performance.

The outstanding performance of molybdenum sheets makes them shine in many fields. In the electronic information industry, molybdenum sheets are used as sputtering targets to deposit thin films, as substrates for thermal matching of silicon, or to make lead frames, which require high purity and excellent flatness. In high-temperature furnaces, molybdenum sheets are used as reflective screens, heating belts, and connectors, making full use of their high melting point and thermal conductivity. In sapphire crystal growth furnaces, cover plates and reflective screens made of molybdenum sheets protect crystal growth due to thermal expansion matching.
